Questions Answered

Do I have to be a member of the church?

If you are not currently a member of St. James Lutheran Church, please contact the church office to schedule a visit with our Pastor.

How do I schedule a Baptism?

Unless there are unusual circumstances, you may schedule a baptism simply by calling the church office. You will be asked to provide basic information such as name, sponsor’s names, parent’s names, etc. You may also download the baptism form, fill out the appropriate information, and bring it into the church office.

When can I schedule a baptism?

Since the Christian congregation assumes responsibilities for the child being baptized, it is ordinarily the custom to schedule a baptism during one of the worship services. We try to avoid services when Holy Communion is being celebrated, otherwise a baptism at any regular service is appropriate.

Under special circumstances, a baptism may occasionally be scheduled after a service or at another time during the week. Please schedule a visit with the Pastor before scheduling a baptism other than during a regular service.

Who can be a sponsor?

Ideally, sponsors should be active members of a Lutheran Church. At the very minimum, sponsors must be an active practicing Christian who will understand and accept the responsibility of being a sponsor.

How old must someone be to be a sponsor?

A sponsor should be a confirmed member of a church, and thus would usually be 14 years of age or older. Sponsors ideally should not be significantly older than the child’s parents. Thus, grandparents are usually not an appropriate choice.

How many sponsors does my child need?

Normally two to four sponsors (or Godparents) should be chosen. For an infant or child, at least one sponsor is required.
